From Film to Digital?

It's amazing how as how much the human race has evolved over the years. In so many things but specifically how we have evolved in the Film, Video, and Animation realm. I remember when my parents had to buy the big VHS cassette tapes for the big camcorder when now my camcorder is as big as my hand and all I need is a SD card.

Lev Manovich in the readings points out how digital media in many ways has redefined the very identity of cinema as we know it. Which goes back to my memories of my parents' VHS tapes versus my digital copies of my videos. The book talks about basically the movie industry has adapted and merged the use of film and digital editing such as using programs to create digital effects and 3D modeling. These "artistic" methods of editing essentially erase the use of actually recording real events of real places (as reference in the book).

If you think about it...how could all those action scenes be done otherwise without harming the rest of the world? For example, the movie Battle of L.A. was a movie about alien invasion and of course all of Los Angeles got destroyed but if you fly down there now, it looks exactly the same as when the movie was being shot.

It is incredible to see how digital technologies have given another way to create the equivalence of reality. If you recall the explosions in the video, they used a combination of digital effects while having filmed the original place of Los Angeles.

Goes to show how we have evolved from simply using film to using a mix of high quality film with digital film.
